Navigating Life's Challenges
"Blood poured in rivulets down my face and neck. Mum hurriedly wrapped a
tea towel around my head to soak up the blood, then called an ambulance. I
was taken to the hospital to be stitched up. Another scar that remains to this
day. At least it saved my mother from one of Big Jerry’s savage beatings, but I
couldn’t pull something like that every time he went to the pub."
"One night, I awoke to hear my mother screaming for help in the early hours of the morning. ‘No, no, please no…’ she begged, sobbing and choking on her tears. There was a loud banging and smacking sound as he hit her again. She begged him to stop, pleading for her life, shrieking in pain. I couldn’t stop shaking and crying as I listened, wrapped in my thick blankets, hiding under the covers. There was nothing I could do to help her,"
"Hopelessness became my constant companion, as I saw no end to the nightmare that played out on repeat, each day blending into the next with no respite. My body remained on high alert, aching for safety that never came."
"As we climbed the stairs, we’d see him standing there, with a sick, twisted smile on his face – the one that let you know he held all the cards as to whether you were going to be safe or not. Sometimes he would let us through into the apartment but other times he’d wait until Mum was about to step onto the landing and he’d kick her down the stairs, smiling all the while, just because he could. What kind of monster kicks a pregnant woman down the stairs?"
